Nestlé-owned Wyeth Nutritionals Ireland Ltd. has announced that its manufacturing plant in Askeaton has received a Platinum certification under the rigorous Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard. The Limerick-based site becomes the first site in Ireland, and only the second Nestlé site in the world, to earn this highest attainable rating.
This certification demonstrates the site’s elite performance in water stewardship and commitment to understanding their relationship with water, embedding the appropriate principles and measures into the factory, engaging with the local community and sharing best practices with the wider water stewardship community internationally.
Achieving a Platinum rating involves moving well beyond core AWS requirements and having significant, positive regional impacts. One of the key actions that set the site apart was its contributions to best water stewardship practices and tools development through its engagement with the Large Water Users Community of Practice in Ireland and to the international water stewardship community via the Nestle global water stewardship initiative.
“Wyeth are a true exemplar site and a wonderful representative of our >250 Community of Practice member sites here in Ireland. We are delighted that the pilot work with them has progressed so well” – Ken Stockil, Central Solutions and Chair Large Water Users Community of Practice.
Wyeth Nutrition collaborated with key partners in developing a comprehensive programme of addressing water related risks and improvement opportunities at the site over recent years. In preparing for the audit, Central Solutions Ltd., provided training and technical advisory services to Wyeth Nutrition with the support of Enterprise Ireland’s GreenPlus Programme.
The certification process culminated with expert independent auditors from UK-based BM Trada determining that the Askeaton site “has demonstrated a real world-leading commitment to water management and sustainability, going above and beyond requirements, and they should be commended for doing so” – Rob Veitch, EVP Fire and Building Products at Element.
